Low-Level Portfolio Tool Reports

Suggestion for the Lowest Level of Reports from the Portfolio Tools

Illustrated using the demonstration portfolio "Flat Pattern Method"

Forms

Completed forms contain real-world participant data.  For each form, add a "Report" link that generates a picture similar to the Preview, with minimal statistics from the completed forms.

Using the same display, replace each input field with data and links

Each link shows a datasheet-style list of all completed forms in that category.

For instance, the link
labeled "Count: 3" next
to the "Skilled" radio button
displays all completed
forms with
Expertise=Skilled:

Statistics display depends on field type.

Text:  the count shows the number of non-null entries, and the list, those with non-null values in that field.

Date:  the count shows the number of non-null values.

Mutually-exclusive choices such as "Expertise":  the count shows the number of each value in that field.  (And it would be even better to expand each radio button to contain the count data.)

Boolean such as "Taken the Construction Course": the checkbox expands to show the counts for each value.

Numeric:  the display shows the average (mean) of the non-null values.

Matrices

Matrices contain no real-world data, but they hold useful meta-data.  For each matrix, add a "Report" link that generates a picture similar to the edit screen, with cell status counts.

Using the same display, replace each cell with minimal status statistics.

Could preserve the color legend, and use bars, or little bar graphs, to show the status frequency in each cell.

To Consider

  1. What about occurrences of identical forms in different cells?
  2. Are some completed forms "off limits" for this kind of reporting?
  3. What about the cell contents, other than forms-- any data there for reports?
  4. What about wizards?  Other portfolio components?
