Meeting Notes for 5-24-2011

BoF - Discussion Session

  • Recruit new membership
  • Congratulate people for participating

Content of BoF

  • If familiar with Sakai 2.x, will want to have some sense of differences related to Sakai OAE, how does it operate, how does it affect the kinds of ideas of what can be supported
  • If using OSP now, will they be able to recognize themselves in the new environment, will it be totally different
  • Hybrid information? Transition or migration strategy? Something in between allows you to think you can move forward with more ease. Lots invested with 2.x, if OAE is so different, might not go over to it
  • Discussing learning objectives, reporting issues, there is a gap, have a concern, Engineering school at U of Montreal, things that have been a gap in 2.x may still be a gap in OAE
  • OAE does not have much in the way of teaching and learning assessment, functions can be used in the service of T and L, but functionality is not actually in OAE at present, means by which that will happen is not entirely clear
  • NYU project has been converted to OAE, Montreal Mati is using the old back end of OAE, did not change to current version of back end, compatible but not OAE, wanting to see how far things have diverged, things could work along side, Montreal will present a proof of concept, whether or not it will be usable depends on decisions made at conference
  • Functionally in OAE, the only thing that is there is NYU, Montreal Mati's stuff may or may not be there. What can institutions expect, what is the time line, one year, two, three, four years? How to plan? Existing functionality - how would it be available.
  • A lot is yet to be determined. Priorities have been determined by institutions putting skin in the game - money or people. That will continue into the current year. There are institutions who have put resources into play who are interested in portfolios: IU, NYU, CSU, but development has been slower than expected. No basic teaching and learning functionality, no portfolio functionality, but that is where hybrid comes in. Continue to use 2.x and use it side by side with OAE. Presentation portfolios with OAE, but assessment functionality in 2.x tools.
  • Need to imagine how it will work - looking to hybrid testing
  • Chronology - portfolio action verbs, moving to minispecs, tremendous set of information
  • Portfolio is not a unitary tool, but a collection of different sets of functionality for different purposes, not tied to any one kind of tool for delivering
  • French users of portfolios - artifacts that have been produced by guided assessment process or by individual students, processes can co-exist
  • T and L lenses - closer association with teaching and learning community, not seen as a separate process, a single continuum, thinking of assessment this makes sense, a long continuum, a matter of where different institutions are on the continuum
  • Minispec process - mini-spec titles and categories, simplified template for portfolio processes
  • Contribution - personas - new administrator persona, user scenarios for portfolios
  • Minispecs no longer used by managed project, but we are using them to write portfolio requirements for OAE, so that when developers are ready they will have something to refer to
  • Don't worry any more about the "approved" personas. The important thing is to put things in context through the user stories
  • Advanced minispec - perhaps reporting for the conference
  • Bob can talk about the leading concepts of OAE and how they might help work wtih portfolios
  • Lynn can talk about the work that OAE has done thus far
  • Jacques - why participate in the visioning process, Montreal Mati has benefited from participating, what are the benefits
  • Janice - history (conferences, phone calls, work groups) and products of visioning process to date, reporting process to date
  • Debbie - minispec process going forward
  • Gather perspectives from the audience - what do they want from this session, do they want to contribute? How do they want to contribute? Listen to them. Find out who is in the audience. Once you know your audience, you can better attend to their needs.
  • If they are interested, sign up for the portfolio list, add to list on bottom of portfolio visioning page

    Next Steps

Congratulations to all who have participated in visioning this year?
  • Purpose of larger portfolio visioning meeting - possibility of continuing demos from Montreal Mati, NYU more things to demo
  • IU resources are controlled by the managed project, guided by the steering committee, won't be doing portfolio functionality, HEC Montreal, UMich has dabbled in the past
  • HEC lots of discussion about medical portfolio, can't promise for sure
  • Valuable work so far to establish what will be the portfolio of the future, guided process for future work on OAE project
