Development |
The Development Discussion Group (DG) is for those interested and involved in the design and development of Sakai. This is the companion wiki space for the sakai-dev email list hosted on Collab's DG: Development (a.k.a. sakai-dev) site. Conference presentations related to this topic can typically be found in the "Building Sakai" track. |

The Using Sakai area is oriented towards the needs of teachers, instructors, researchers, collaborators, instructional technologists, user support and related members of the Sakai community. It encompasses a broad range of topics, including sharing best practices for teaching and collaborating; asking, answering and demoing how various tools and capabilities work; discussing end-user support materials (e.g., documentation, training, tutorials); connecting with users with similar interests and needs; etc. |
Only members of the group's Collab site can send email to the group's email address. To join a group, login to Collab and use the Membership tool to join the group's site. (If you need a Collab account, you can self-register for using the New Account tool.)
Regional and Language Sakai Sub-Communities
In order to help foster a local sense of community among organizations that are geographically close, or which share a common language, we support the self-organization of regional/language groups and activities within the greater Sakai community.

The Performance Working Group is a team of interested organizations working collaboratively to improve Sakai framework and tool scalability, reliability, and performance times. Shared design, resources, results, and discussions of this working group will supplement the functionality testing of the QA Working Group. |

Our goal is to produce sets of development documentation and sample code to facilitate Sakai tool development. The idea is to allow a programmer with basic knowledge of Java to go through these tutorials and end up equipped to write a Sakai tool. |

Projects
Some projects have their own email list, however, most simply use the general sakai-dev@collab.sakaiproject.org email list , which is a good place to start for any development related question about one of the projects below.
Projects are classified as:
- Core/Service - Tools and services included in the Sakai release.
- Provisional - Tools included in the release, but disabled by default while the community builds trust and experience with them.
- Contrib - Tools not included in the release, and of varying degrees of production-readiness.

In particular, it fulfills the requirements of displaying a list of resources together with their descriptions and creating links to Resources content in the left-hand navigation (tool) menu. |
||
Data Warehouse |
Provisional |
The Data Warehouse is designed to use in conjunction with Reports. It provides a way to abstract reportable data from the Sakai database through the Sakai APIs, which avoids the need to know about the data model of the database. It also allows access to data in the database that are stored in xml (resource metadata, forms data, etc), by extracting that information through the APIs and putting it into tables in the data warehouse area. Reports, therefore, are as backwards compatible as the APIs are. |

Contrib |
A proof-of-principle Sakai-Fedora-tool screen shot, which allows users to browse, search, and edit a Fedora Repository from within Sakai. "My Sakai" makes it possible to get your files and announcements, and keep track of what's going on in your Sakai sites, straight from your desktop. For example, a student engrossed in writing an essay, who suddenly realises they need to check something in a document in their course site, can open it straight from their desktop widget, without having to break off and navigate through Sakai to find it. "My Sakai" widgets show you recent activity on all of the worksites you're a member of. This means that the widget will tell you when a new announcement or a new resource has been added. The widgets also provide synoptic views of Resources and Announcements. We have created widgets for Mac DashBoard, Vista Sidebar, Facebook, iGoogle, Google Desktop, and RSS. |

The Sakai Installer project started as an experiment by Edia in running Sakai off a USB stick. We wanted to find a way to make it easier for people to give Sakai a try and at the same time we wanted something to hand out during the Amsterdam Sakai conference in 2007 that would make people notice us. I think I can say we succeeded in both. The version that we're now open sourcing is an updated version of the one that we created the Sakai on a USB stick with. That USB stick contained an installer that does two things: it check for and installs a Java JRE and it starts a demo version of Sakai that is placed on the stick alongside the installer. Once started, Sakai runs entirely from the stick. The database is HSQLDB, which is stored on the stick itself. That means you can start Sakai from the stick, create users, sites, resources etc and than plug the stick into a different computer and find Sakai in the exact state that you left it in. The source for the Sakai installer is in contrib: https://source.sakaiproject.org/contrib//sakai-installer/ |

SakaiAdminX is a web application that seeks to simplify and ease Sakai administrative tasks. Using SakaiAdminX you can:
SakaiAdminX introduces more levels of administrative permissions to Sakai which allows a single Sakai environment to be used for multiple institutions or clients. This is achieved through the concept of 'clients', where each client has a set of sites attached to it - with their own branding/look and feel. Each client also has its own admin/helpdesk users who have access to all sites attached to that client. You also get a helpdesk user, which has access to all sites like an admin user and you assign users to be helpdesk users giving them access to all sites, much like the admin user works in Sakai at present. The main function of SakaiAdminX revolves around the 'Site Profile'. This is a place where all editing of the site takes place, ie title, skin, icon, contact details, as well as adding and removing users. All done with far less clicks than the existing Sakai interfaces, and all done on the one screen. The Site Profile is easily extensible, so if you need additional functionality, just plug it in! SakaiAdminX can also be deployed separate to Sakai itself, or sitting alongside the rest of the Sakai webapps as it makes use of a vastly extended set of webservices written for Sakai. SakaiAdminX includes a single sign on from SakaiAdminX to your existing Sakai installation, and can be CASified easily (instructions included). |

On today's campus, two main enterprise applications run the business of a college or university. The Student Information System (SIS) is the lifeblood for tracking courses, enrollment, and outcomes at an institution. The Learning Management System (LMS) has attained a high profile on campus as learning demands for the student population change and evolve. To continue to deliver solutions that meet the critical needs of higher education, Unicon and Oracle have partnered together to integrate these two applications to offer a complete solution to the marketplace that allows for integration of course, enrollment, and outcomes information to be exchanged between the Student Information System and the Learning Management System. With the Student Administration Integration Pack (SAIP) for PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Oracle is exposing course and enrollment data via open standards that can be consumed by a Learning Management System. Through the Sakora project, Unicon is providing the functionality for Sakai to consume this data via the same open standards. This work is a large step forward in allowing institutions to have seamless integration between the two most vital applications on campus. |

The Skin manager tool allows site administrators to install and manage skins in a Sakai instance. Skins are uploaded in the portal as .zip archives that contain graphics and style sheets. The tool displays all the skins in use throughout the Sakai instance and indicates which sites use a particular skin. Skins may be revised by uploading a new archive and it is possible to revert to earlier versions of a skin. This strongly simplifies the skin installation process: no longer access to the file system of the sakai instance is needed. |

The Sousa project is aimed at creating simple, sequenced content for delivery to a student. It is based on the idea that content should be managed by the Content Hosting Service, thus giving users complete access to it via the Resource tool. Sequences are saved in XML files, and eventually will have an export mechanism that will zip up a sequence with its content items. It can be thought of as a learning construction kit that's easy to extend and flexible in its use. |

User Activity is designed to show the history and details of a user's activity within a site from a single place. The primary use case for this is to support lecturers or tutors (=instructors / TAs) who want to look at the pattern of participation of a particular student in a course for academic diagnostic purposes (or to support, acknowledge, encourage or grade the student's online participation). Secondary applications might be for users to see details of each other's contributions. This will be complementary to Site Stats and the IU Feeds tool. |
