MODS is an XML-based, human-readable standard for representing bibliographic data. It could be considered a 'cousin' of MARCXML in the sense that many MODS fields are directly related to MARCXML fields and that data can easily be converted between the two formats. MODS, however, is a standalone format and does not need existing MARCXML to be created or to be useful.

There is a MODS Stylesheet provided by the Library of Congress to convert MARCXML to MODS.
