The following script walks you through the basic process of creating a matrix from scratch using default settings. Several sections, such as 'Progression', 'General Feedback Options' and 'Item Feedback Options', have multiple configuration options. At some phase of testing, each of these options should be tested, though there are not yet scripts that explicitly describe the steps involved.

Create Matrix

1

From the Sakai menu choose Matrices.

The 'Manage Matrices' page displays

2

From the Manage Matrices page, choose Add

The 'Add Matrix' page displays.

3

In the Title field, enter Matrix from Scratch, and add a description if you wish.

4

In the Colors and Style area, if you want to use a custom style sheet (a .css file), you can upload and/or select it. You can also choose different colors for matrix status, but it is recommended that matrix status colors remain consistent for the institution.

5

In the 'Structure' section, click Add Column

The 'Add/Edit Column' page displays

6

Enter a title for the column and, if desired, define background and font colors.
Click Update

The 'Add Matrix' page redisplays with the new column listed in the 'Structure' section

7

In the 'Structure' section, click Add Row

The 'Add/Edit Row' page displays

8

Enter a title for the row and, if desired, define background and font colors.
Click Update

The 'Add Matrix' page redisplays with the new row listed in the 'Structure' section

9

(Optional) Continue to add columns and rows until you have the structure you want for your matrix. You can add, move, or edit your rows and columns at any time.

Any new rows and columns created are listed in the 'Structure' section

10

(Optional) Use the radio buttons in the Progression area to define a progression for your matrix. The progression determines which cells have the ready status and which are locked. (For instance, with horizontal progression, the cells in the first column are ready to accept input and the columns to the right are locked. As soon as a cell is submitted, the cell to its immediate right changes from locked to ready.) Choose from None, Horizontal, Vertical, Open, or Determined by Instructor.

Each of these progressions should be tested, but to start, select None

11

The following steps allow you to set default forms for use in all cells of the current matrix in the Participant Forms, Feedback, and Evaluation sections of the page. Once the defaults are defined, you can override them in individual cells by disabling the forms or selecting different ones. All forms are optional.
Under 'Custom Form', click the Select a form drop down menu and select the form Contact Information (this form should have been added in script ST.Script.04.Set-up Project Site).
Click the Add button to the right of the dropdown

When you scroll back down to the 'Participant Forms' section, the 'Contact Information' form is listed under 'Custom Form', and there is a 'Remove' link below it.

12

In the 'Participant Forms' section click the Reflection drop down.
Select the form Reflection

The 'Reflection' form is highlighted in the 'Reflection' drop down menu.

13

In the 'Feedback' section, accept the defaults of 'Unrestriced General Feedback' and 'Unrestricted Evidence Item Feedback'

All permutations of these settings should be tested, but to start, accept the defaults

14

In the Feedback drop down menu, select the Feedback form

The 'Feedback' form is highlighted in the 'Feedback' drop down.

15

Under the 'Feedback' drop down, click Add Reviewers

The 'Select Reviewer' page displays.

16

Under 'Select by Role', in the Roles select box, click maintain and then click the Add button

The 'maintain' role is moved over to the 'Selected Role(s)' box.

17

Click Save

The 'Add Matrix' page redisplays with '1. maintain (Role)' listed under 'Reviewers'

18

If desired, click Allow participant to send feedback invitations to additional reviewers to give participants the option of inviting feedback from reviewers of their choice.

This should be tested, but to start, accept the default.

19

In the 'Evaluation' section, from the Evaluation drop-down menu, select the Evaluation form

The 'Evaluation' form is highlighted in the drop down.

20

If desired, check the Hide evaluations from participants checkbox

This should be tested both on and off

21

Click the Add Evaluators link

The 'Select Evaluators' page displays.

22

Follow the same procedure as above to add the 'maintain' role and save changes

Under 'Evaluators', '1. maintain (Role)' is listed.

23

Click Save Changes

The 'Edit Matrix' form displays with the row(s) and column(s) defined above in this script.

24

Click Return to List

The 'Manage Matrices' page displays with the 'Matrix from Scratch' matrix listed, but not as a link

25

Click Preview

The 'Preview' link is replaced by the 'Publish' link

26

Click Publish

The 'Publish Scaffolding' page displays with a warning.

27

Click Continue

The 'Matrix from Scratch' listing is now a link, and the 'Publish' link is no longer present
