Personally, I like that the instructor receives the email. It serves as a confirmation (or reminder) for them that the email was sent, and it allows them to see exactly what the email says.

Based on Dave's inquiry, it sounds like the feature is very literal – 24 hours exactly before the due date (whatever is set for the assignment).

Dave, is your concern that a student might lose sight of the message in any overnight spam email clutter? Or that a phone might chime late at night? Or something else? I'm not very concerned about these items, personally, but wanted to better understand your perspective.
