I have renamed the title of this ticket from “Info & Settings” to “Settings” based on the more recent feedback.

Thanks, @Wilma Hodges – in the short term (like for 23.x? at least), can we change the tool name to “Settings” until the larger split action happens? It would be nice to have even a little movement on this… um, 7+ years old request?

T&L reviewed this Jira on today’s call, and the consensus was that part of the reason “Site Info” is confusing is that the tool has two audiences (instructor and student) with two very different experiences when using the tool. We like the name “Settings” for the tool. However, it seems like the best solution would be more than just renaming. The tool should be split up so that course-management items remain in “Settings” and people-management items move to “Roster.” The Roster tool could easily absorb the Add Participants, Manage Participants, Add/Edit Rosters, and Manage Groups tabs.

Very fair point! Distinguishing between system settings, profile settings, or site settings will be important. For professors familiar with "Site Info" from past experience, changing to "Site Settings" would be an easier adjustment, too. You swayed me, @Tiffany Stull ! ![]()

I prefer "Site Settings" to "Settings". Just "Settings" to me implies that there is something I can modify - personal settings. For students, that's not what Site Info does at all. It just displays information and lets them join joinable groups when these are available.

For years, there has been interest in the Sakai community in renaming the "Site Info" tool to something that better describes its function. For Sakai 11, I propose renaming the tool from "Site Info" to "Site Settings."
RATIONALE:
"Site Info" is not clear and does not communicate the tool's utility, especially to instructors or site managers. Users often say that the label "Info" does not convey that they can change anything related to the site, just view information about it. By changing its tool name, the goal is to clear up this confusion and empower professors to manage their sites. At the same time, "Site Info" isn't limited only to instructors, teaching assistants, or "maintain" users. Students or "access" users also can use the tool. For example, group functionality is part of the Site Info tool. So, student users need access to the tool and a label that doesn't make the tool seem to be only for professors.
I propose "Site Settings" since this communicates a place where someone can check the settings. Settings could apply to any user. Labels like "Site Setup," "Site Editor," "Site Manager," "Control Panel," etc. may suggest that non-instructor/maintain users shouldn't try the tool. The label "Settings" is also used by popular online services like Google to allow users to adjust a tool's settings, so this seems in alignment with software in general, too.
I am completely open to other naming conventions. I'd just love an improvement to the name of this important tool! Thank you for your consideration.
