AFAICS there are not code references to this value (showitemstatistics) anywhere in the edu services code or the gradebook(1) code.
I am going to go ahead a remove it under a different ticket number

There are some gradebook 1 compatibility issues here... this setting is part of the edu-services API... some thought should be put into how to interpret it

OK, Thanks.... I fixed the setup panel inconsistency... now I will go thru and remove the showItemStatistics checkbox

I found another affect of this checkbox handling.
If you change the setting of the Course Grades: checkbox (on to off, or off to on), and then save/close the panel, and then select to edit the Gradebook settings again, the gradebook name and organization values disappear. To get them back and allow update of the other parts of the panel, the user must select some other item for editing first, and then return to the gradebook setup panel – or use the gradebook reset arrow.

Yes, removing the show item statistics checkbox makes sense – all it currently seems to do is be an extra checkbox needed to show any combination of statistical information (rank, median, mode, mean, etc.). That is confusing to users who think they should start seeing the mean for an item by just clicking the 'Mean' checkbox.
The "Class Rank" does not display to students unless the "Course Grade" is also selected.
A user reported that they would like to be able to show students their class rank but not their grade as they grade on a curve once the course is complete. These two settings should be not be dependent on each other. The students should be able to see the rank without the grade.
