Charles I'm happy with whatever fix you think is best so long as it allows us to not have the buttons in the top bar.

Whilst I'm here I also have an issue with the placement of the Next button at thye foot of the page.

I put them there when I moved breadcrumbs into the same area. That made sense because breadcrumbs were already there. I thought putting all the navigation in one place made sense. Remember, we're often showing content in the main body. Putting the buttons there cleanly separates the lessons stuff from what's being showed in the windows. They are often other Sakai tools, which may have their own navigation.
There is an alternative placement of the buttons, which is used when Lessons is put in an iframe. I can easily provide a configuration option to use that all the time. However I think the default placement really makes the most sense with Sakai 11.
add a new property, "lessons.surpress.top.backAndNextButtons" (or similar) which, if missing from the properties file, is set to false and which if set to true stops the Back and next Buttons being output at the top of a lessons sub-page.
