Thanks Matt
From the testing notes, it appears there should have been a red 'X'. I've confirmed that the backspace will successfully remove the date from the due date/late/feedback on both published and working copy assessments. Save and going back into the exam settings shows the date was removed successfully.

This jira changed the implementation. There isn't an X, this should allow you to clear out the retract date with the backspace.

Tested on Sakai nightly master/13x. Cleared cache and created new assessment entering dates in the available/due/late/feedback options.

Edited the settings again and no 'X' is present next to the calendar fields. This is the same for the draft/working copy and published exam. See screenshot

I've tested the change locally, and it seems to be working. It allows null dates for both due and retract, and if dates are present in either field it respects your choice to null them. I've tested with both working and published copies.
I'm going to submit a PR for this little change. , if you could test/verify after it's been merged that would be a huge help!

It's been a while since I looked at this, but yes, if the due date field already allows nulling, then the only date field needing to be changed is late submission date. The ability to null due/late submission dates may need to be confirmed/modified in Settings for both Working and Published Copies.
Allowing it to be cleared by deletion seems effective to me for replacing the clear dates button.
In Sakai 11.2, once you enter a date in samigo, you can't null it. Sometimes, instructors want null dates (for example, for a placement exam that will be reused over years). UVA has developed a Clear date option (controlled with an X icon for visual users) to null unwanted dates and will contribute back.
Note: The Clear date option has been tested for accessibility - X icon is in the tab order of the Settings page and has appropriate alt tag.
