I did not commit the terminology change of the "New Topic" link on the main screen to "New Topic(s)". I figured that one might be controversial and could be fixed as a bug later on if we find the terminology change necessary.

Here's an updated patch that changes the UI to remove the tabbed interface.

If the latest mockup I made (https://jira.sakaiproject.org/secure/attachment/28310/September+20+Mockup+Screenshot.jpg) satisfies Gonzalo's concerns I think it will be possible to get one last patch up before the end of the week. Dropping the jQuery tabs should actually simplify the code a little.

Thanks to everyone who's worked on this over the last year and half. Anything anyone can do to get this feature over this last hump is greatly appreciated!
Private, group based discussions are a common use of Forums across institutions. Unfortunately the permissions that need to be configured for each Forum/Topic are complex and tedious.
To configure a private group Forum/Topic requires setting all student's (and any other group) permissions' set to none and then to set the specific group to be a contributor. These steps are multiplied by the number of groups. This is a relatively common task that is very complex.
Would it be possible to simplify the process to "create a group topic" that simply presented a list of existing groups/roles and then assumes all of these settings?
I appreciate your consideration.
