This issue was found in gwt 2.3 and the work around ( http://goo.gl/deqTg ) was to include specific references to required transient dependencies to java.validation and sources which were not properly being resolved at the time.
there is a javax.validation.version in the root pom and two dependencies in the client pom (look for the comments)
