New Use Cases

IUPUI School of Secondary Education

The School of Education at the IUPUI has developed a set of school-wide competencies called the Principles of Teacher Education that pull together the outcomes of various disciplinary standards organizations.   As a graduation requirement, students are required to demonstrate the mastery of the PTEs.     In addition, the school must show evidence of student achievement and program effectiveness  to their accrediting bodies.  Furthermore, the school is also accountable for developing an annual program review report to university administration that described student learning in relation to the Principles of Undergraduate Learning.  To satisfy their student and program assessment needs, the secondary education department conducted a curriculum review and developed a curriculum map to determine which PTEs were being taught in which classes.  As a department, they agreed to conduct develop and administer standardized mastery assignments  in specific courses that can be used to monitor and assess student's growth and mastery of the PTEs over the four semesters of the major.  The four semester experience is scaffolded in the matrix tool with each row representing one PTE and each column representing one of the four semesters or blocks as they are called.  Each semester, students are asked by one or several of their instructors to go to the School's portfolio sight and to complete an assignment in a specific matrix cell.  Even though the matrix cell assignment is part of their  assigned course work, both students and instructor must go to another site with an unfamiliar set of tools to complete the work.  Typically, the instructor teaching the course with the matrix assignment is also responsible for evaluating the assignment.

Currently, because there are no canned reports in OSP, the department is able to use the matrix to review the work by individual students in individual cells, but they are unable to get a report on the evals in all cells for an individual student or summary/detailed results for multiple students.

To satisfy institutional reporting requirements, the department has mapped their program outcomes PTEs to institutional outcomes, which allows them to pull individual examples of how students are satisfying institutional goals, but this is manual, labor intensive process.
