QA Test
used assignments to 'add Assignment to gradebook' in a weighted category gradebook:
several items in regular, weight equally, extra credit, weight by points. categories. None of the attempts resulted in the students and their data disappearing from the grading grid. Those same tests made in a test site in production resulted in blanking the grading grid data, until the new item was edited and saved in the gradebook structure panel.
This GRBK passes, as well as GRBK 1345.

This is fixed by GRBK-1345. The issue is that if you create a grade item for a weighted categorie's gradebook via the assignment's tool, then the grade item's "ASSIGNMENT_WEIGHTING" is set to null. The https://sakaiproject.atlassian.net/browse/GRBK-1345#icft=GRBK-1345 patch fixes this scenario. Also, having a "0" ASSIGNMENT_WEIGHTING doesn't cause any issues. Please test this on smartsite-test.

see https://sakaiproject.atlassian.net/browse/GRBK-1345#icft=GRBK-1345 – this one talks about the 0% weight being hidden by the weight-by-points option

I agree with fixing it asap – it has been causing a bit of trouble for folks (using Assignments to create gradebook items in a weighted category gradebook) since June.

Agreed, I suggest we fix this for 1.8.1. It does not require a very 'involved' fix..... I would also suggest elevating this back to a blocker... I downgraded under false assumptions.
No students were displayed in the grading grid until the homework item was assigned a percent weight. When i set it back to the initial value of 0, it then displays the students properly.
(edit) Zero-value assignments can only be set as such through an external tool. So a fix will focus on the point where items are read from the edu-services repository
