At our institution, given the example in the screenshot, the student would receive an "F" (failing) in the Gradebook and by that would understand that he/she did not pass the class. At our university, each instructor must place a grade scale in their syllabus to explain what constitutes a letter grade outcome for the course, such as A, A-, B+, B, etc.
Is there more to the feature request to explain the specific use case or unique nature of the classes or sites in question? Does the institution simply not want to display an "F" and thus wants to leave the field blank? Wouldn't this feature create confusion for students? I can see this resulting in students reporting that their grade is missing and requesting tech support for a "bug" in the Gradebook?
