  1. Download version 3.1.12+ from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/3.1.html
  2. Extract the file to /opt
  3. Copy mysql-connector-java-<version>-bin.jar to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib
  4. Delete the extracted folder
