Getting Started in Sakai

There are many ways to join, monitor and contribute to the Sakai Community. This is a quick list of pointers to the common activities that you might want to to get you connected to the community.

  • Joining the Email Lists - Sakai has a number of mailing lists - The typical first mailing lists to join are Sakai Users and Sakai Developers and then if you will be working on Quality Assurance, join the Sakai QA list.

  • Attend community meetings - Sakai has a number of online standing meetings every week. You can add the Sakai calendar to your Calendar. If you only have time for one meeting per week, we recommend the “Core Team” meeting because the first part of the meeting to meeting includes status reports from the various working groups that make up Sakai. So in about an hour you can hear what is going on and even ask questions about any aspect of Sakai.

  • Get a Jira account - Sakai uses the Atlassian JIRA to track bugs, propose features and track progress on releases. The Sakai Project Jira and Confluence both use your Atlassian Cloud login. You will need to login to Atlassian Cloud and then get added to Sakai Jira and/or Confluence. Existing Sakai Project users can send you an invite to Sakai’s Jira and/or Confluence under their “People” tab. Once you are added, you may need to request an upgrade to your permissions to file new bugs or use other features of Jira - please email sakaicoordinator@apereo.org to get your account upgraded.

  • If you are interested in helping create Sakai - the easiest place to start is to help with our Quality Assurance efforts. There is always work to be done and while working on QA, you learn about community processes and become more skilled in using Sakai. Many community members get their start can go to the Welcome to QA Page or the Sakai QA 23 Hub.

  • Sakai has a Slack that you can join once you get more involved in working with the community.

Welcome to the Sakai Community - we love to meet new members and see all that you can bring to us. If you get stuck or need help just ask another community member.
